The Legacy We Inherited, The Future We Must Build By Minniej

A Reflection from ME Skincare

June is more than a month on the calendar. For many African Americans, it is a season of reflection, remembrance, celebration, gratitude, and responsibility. As we honor Juneteenth, we pause to recognize not only the end of slavery in the United States, but also the resilience, strength, innovation, faith, perseverance, and excellence of African Americans whose sacrifices paved the way for future generations.

At ME Skincare, we proudly celebrate Juneteenth because our story is connected to the story of our people. As a Black-owned business founded by an African American woman, we understand that every opportunity we have today was built upon the prayers, labor, endurance, and determination of those who came before us.

The Meaning of Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.

For many, Juneteenth represents freedom delayed but not denied.

It is a reminder that freedom is not simply the absence of chains. True freedom is access to opportunity, education, ownership, wealth, health, dignity, and the ability to create a better future for generations to come.

Today, Juneteenth stands as a celebration of African American culture, achievement, faith, family, community, and progress.

Remembering Our Ancestors

As we celebrate, we remember the countless ancestors whose names may never appear in history books.

We remember:

  • The mothers who protected their children despite unimaginable hardships.
  • The fathers who worked tirelessly to provide hope when resources were scarce.
  • The grandparents who prayed over generations they would never meet.
  • The educators who fought for equal learning opportunities.
  • The pastors who inspired communities through faith.
  • The civil rights leaders who challenged injustice.
  • The entrepreneurs who built businesses despite systemic barriers.
  • The soldiers who served a country that did not always serve them equally.

Many of our ancestors never lived to see Black mayors, Black governors, Black judges, Black doctors, Black CEOs, Black entrepreneurs, Black legislators, Black college presidents, and even a Black President of the United States.

Yet they dreamed of these possibilities.

Because they endured, we now have opportunities they could only imagine.

Their sacrifices must never be forgotten.

The Soundtrack of Freedom

Music has always been at the heart of African American culture.

From spirituals sung during slavery to gospel hymns, jazz, blues, R&B, soul, hip-hop, and contemporary music, our songs have told stories of struggle, hope, faith, freedom, and triumph.

Music became a language of survival.

It preserved our history.

It carried our pain.

It celebrated our victories.

It united generations.

When we gather during Juneteenth celebrations and hear the sounds of gospel choirs, jazz musicians, drum circles, spoken word artists, and cultural performers, we are witnessing the continuation of a legacy that stretches back centuries.

Our music reminds us that even in the darkest moments, our people found a way to create beauty.

Celebrating Black Excellence

Juneteenth is not only about looking back.

It is also about recognizing how far we have come.

Today, African Americans are making history every day as:

  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Surgeons
  • Attorneys
  • Judges
  • Educators
  • Scientists
  • Engineers
  • Inventors
  • Authors
  • Artists
  • Government officials
  • Community leaders
  • Business owners
  • Nonprofit founders
  • Financial professionals
  • Technology innovators
  • Corporate executives

Black excellence is not limited to entertainment or athletics.

It exists in boardrooms, classrooms, laboratories, hospitals, city halls, courtrooms, churches, and small businesses across America.

Every achievement represents another barrier broken and another door opened for future generations.

Supporting Black Owned Businesses

One of the greatest ways we can honor the spirit of Juneteenth is by supporting one another economically.

Historically, many communities thrived because neighbors intentionally invested in local businesses.

When we support Black owned businesses, we do more than purchase products.

We support families.

We create jobs.

We strengthen neighborhoods.

We build generational wealth.

We create opportunities for future entrepreneurs.

At ME Skincare, our mission extends beyond skincare. We believe in empowering communities through education, entrepreneurship, and wellness. Every purchase supports a dream, a vision, and a commitment to serving others with excellence.

The Importance of Changing the Narrative

For generations, many harmful cycles have affected our communities.

Some were inherited through circumstances beyond our control.

Others developed through years of economic hardship, limited opportunities, and systemic barriers.

However, every generation has the power to make changes.

We must begin asking ourselves:

What lessons are we teaching our children?

Are we teaching survival or are we teaching ownership?

Are we teaching temporary success or lasting legacy?

Are we teaching spending or investing?

Are we teaching dependence or empowerment?

The future of our community depends on how we answer these questions.

Teaching Wealth, Legacy, and Financial Literacy

One of the most valuable gifts we can leave our children is knowledge.

Children should understand:

  • The importance of education.
  • The value of good credit.
  • How to manage money.
  • The power of entrepreneurship.
  • Homeownership.
  • Investing.
  • Savings.
  • Insurance.
  • Estate planning.
  • Building generational wealth.

Too many young adults enter adulthood without understanding how financial systems work.

Knowledge creates options.

Options create opportunities.

Opportunities create freedom.

Financial literacy is not just about money.

It is about creating stability, security, and choices for future generations.

Strong Families Build Strong Communities

Many cultures around the world embrace multigenerational living, shared resources, and collective support.

There is wisdom in families helping one another build stronger foundations.

Success should not be measured by appearances, status symbols, or keeping up with others.

Success should be measured by peace, stability, growth, wisdom, health, and legacy.

The goal should not be to impress people.

The goal should be to build something that lasts.

Something our children and grandchildren can inherit.

Something that improves the lives of future generations.

Getting Involved Matters

Real change begins in our homes but extends into our communities.

We encourage families to:

  • Volunteer at local schools.
  • Mentor youth.
  • Support community programs.
  • Attend city council meetings.
  • Participate in neighborhood events.
  • Serve on nonprofit boards.
  • Support educational initiatives.
  • Create scholarship opportunities.
  • Encourage civic engagement.

Every positive action creates a ripple effect.

Never underestimate the impact of one person choosing to serve.

Choosing Purpose Over Destruction

As a community, we must continue encouraging our youth to choose paths that lead to growth and opportunity.

Violence is not the answer.

Crime is not the answer.

Exploitation is not the answer.

Hurting others is not the answer.

True power comes through discipline, education, character, integrity, compassion, and leadership.

The strongest leaders are not those who control others.

They are those who uplift others.

Faith, Hope, and Moving Forward

For many African American families, faith has always been a source of strength.

Faith carried our ancestors through slavery.

Faith carried communities through segregation.

Faith carried families through economic hardship.

Faith continues to provide hope today.

If you do not know where to begin, begin with prayer.

Seek wisdom.

Seek guidance.

Seek understanding.

And when opportunities for growth appear, have the courage to act.

Do not allow fear to stop you.

Do not allow pride to stop you.

Do not allow doubt to stop you.

Sometimes the breakthrough we are praying for arrives through the helping hands of another person.

Be willing to receive support.

Be willing to learn.

Be willing to grow.

To Our Youth: You Were Never Created to Follow the Crowd

One of the greatest challenges facing our youth today is the pressure to fit in.

The pressure to wear what everyone else wears.

The pressure to say what everyone else says.

The pressure to act like everyone else acts.

The pressure to chase trends, popularity, and acceptance.

But history teaches us something powerful:

The people who changed the world were rarely the people who followed the crowd.

They were the people willing to stand apart from it.

Far too many young people hide their intelligence because they do not want to be called “nerds.”

Far too many hide their faith because they do not want to be made fun of.

Far too many hide their dreams because they are afraid of what others might think.

Far too many hide their character because they believe being respectful, responsible, or focused is somehow uncool.

But there is nothing embarrassing about excellence.

There is nothing embarrassing about education.

There is nothing embarrassing about going to church.

There is nothing embarrassing about respecting your parents.

There is nothing embarrassing about choosing not to follow destructive trends.

There is nothing embarrassing about having goals.

There is nothing embarrassing about wanting a better future.

The real courage comes from standing firm when everyone around you is moving in the wrong direction.

You do not need to fit into a crowd that is headed nowhere.

You do not need to participate in behavior that damages your future.

You do not need to sacrifice your values to gain temporary acceptance.

You do not need to become someone else just to belong.

The world does not need more followers.

The world needs leaders.

The world needs young men who understand responsibility, integrity, discipline, and purpose.

The world needs young women who understand their worth, dignity, intelligence, strength, and value.

The world needs students who are not afraid to learn.

The world needs future entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, engineers, educators, scientists, inventors, community leaders, public servants, and business owners.

Most importantly, the world needs young people who understand that popularity fades, but purpose lasts.

The shoes will wear out.

The trends will change.

The social media likes will disappear.

The approval of others will come and go.

But education remains.

Character remains.

Faith remains.

Knowledge remains.

Legacy remains.

Do not spend your life trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Spend your life becoming the person God created you to be.

The goal is not to impress people.

The goal is to impact people.

The goal is not to look successful.

The goal is to become successful.

The goal is not to fit in.

The goal is to stand out for all the right reasons.

And if standing for what is right makes you different, then be different.

Because many of the young people watching you are secretly looking for someone brave enough to lead the way.

Be that leader.

Be that example.

Be that difference.

Your future self will thank you for it.

A Message to the Next Generation

To our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and future leaders:

You are the dreams your ancestors prayed for.

You are living in opportunities they hoped would exist.

Honor their sacrifices by pursuing excellence.

Value your education.

Protect your reputation.

Understand your finances.

Care for your health.

Build your faith.

Support your community.

Create businesses.

Invent solutions.

Lead with integrity.

Love your people.

And never forget where you come from.
